Wamberto Vasconcelos

Professor, Department of Computing Science, University of Aberdeen

I have been actively involved in consultancy activities with the industry sector, whether they are developing new software solutions or re-developing existing solutions with new technologies. I offer advice on technologies for autonomous and distributed systems, including Web-based solutions, Cloud computing and mobile technologies.

I was technical consultant to Technabling Ltd., in their successful entry at the JISC TechDis SBRI competition to fund development work on a location and gesture-based communication system which enables learners to interact with mobile technology to produce text and/or audio output and execution of commands (check the original/archived call for proposals here).

This initial pilot project named "Portable Sign-Language Translator" (PSLT) ran from May to November 2011. At the end of the pilot project, the same team successfully entered another stage of the competition (SBRI Phase 2) to fund further development and commercialisation, securing funding for 18 months (02/2012 to 06/2013). The PSLT web site is available at http://www.pslt.org/.

I also served a consultant sponsored by an Encompass Kick-Start Award for the "Online Delivery of Software-Based Vision Rehabilitation Interventions" Project, with Professor Arash Sahraie (Psychology, University of Aberdeen), and NovaVision. This consultancy ran from 10/2012 to 12/2012, and resulted in a plan for re-purposing existing software as a Web-based application for health interventions.

I am always keen to engage in technical discussions with industrial partners. If you are interested in my services, then please email me.
